Verse 1:
Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for Heav'n and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Refrain:
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Verse 2:
"Let not your heart be troubled,"
His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth
But one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Verse 3:
Whenever I am tempted,
Whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing,
Whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him,
From care He sets me free:
And I know He watches me.
Have a wonderful Sunday!

Hi Carolyn,
This is my first visit to your blog and I was blessed to read this particular post. Yesterday as I launched Real Player on my notebook, I scanned my playlist of albums wondering, What do I want to hear Lord?
I decided on Lynette Hawkins Stephens because I enjoy her version of His Eye is on the Sparrow. It is a song that fills me with great joy and appreciation for the love and grace God bestows on me.
Later, as my wife and I left to attend a celebration of a co-worker's newborn child, those words echoed in my thoughts:
"Why should I feel discouraged?...
When Jesus is my portion.
A constant friend is He...
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye in the sparrow,
And I know He watches over me."
I'm including a link to Lynette's version of His Eye Is on the Sparrow which I hope will be a blessing as you listen to it.
Music is such an inspiration to me. I'm beginning to realize why David's relationship with God was expressed through music.
Thank you for sharing an encouraging and inspired post along with the beautiful pictures and lyrics.
Blessings and peace.

I do so love this hymn. I love to watch the birds as they come to the birdfeeder. It brings so much peace to know that God cares for the sparrow who is such a wee little thing. And that HE cares for me too.

I'm so glad God included the sparrow verses in the Bible. It always gives me comfort to know how valuable we are to Him.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your condolences about my mom. So sorry to hear your mom also has Alzheimer's. I agree with you; it is a terrible monster.
Please stay in touch if I can help you in any way. Praying for your journey ahead...
I haven't thought of this song in years - it is truly beautiful.
Thank you for visiting my blog and your encouraging comments.
